Welcome to Solta, an Afro-Brazilian arts celebration!

This show was created by Professora Mandingueira (Carla Locatelli), and is performed by the incredible talent in the Arrodeia Performing group, part of the Bora Vadiar Capoeira Collective.
Solta in Portuguese means "free, loose, untied," and our show is in
honor of Dia da Consciência Negra (Black Awareness Day) in Brazil, celebrated in November. It is an homage to Zumbi dos Palmares, Dandara, Besouro, Teresa de Benguela, Marielle Franco, Maria Felipa, Mestre Môa do Katendê and many others who have been fighting for freedom, equity, respect and social justice.
This show is made possible thanks to the Celebrate South Salt Lake Grant by the South Salt Lake Arts Council.

Program

"Não sou seu negro"
by Melodia, Girassol & Letícia

"Não nasci pra te servir nem te ouvir
Eu sou canto de Zumbi, resisti
A desumanização desde a colonização
É que faz tua condição no meu chão

Hoje sei do meu valor, negro amor
Me levanto junto a voz dos irmãos
Pra fazer reparação deve haver na nossa mão
A riqueza fruto da nossa dor"
"I wasn't born to serve you or listen to you
I am Zumbi's song, I resisted
The dehumanization since colonization
It's what makes your condition on my ground

Today I know my worth, black love
I rise with the voice of the brothers
In order to make repairs, there must be in our hand The wealth, fruit of our pain"

"Foi na roda dos Palmares"
By Letícia

"Êô oyá
Foi na roda dos Palmares
Que Zumbi consagrou
A capoeira do passado
O retrato dos negros
Liberdade que surgia
Para um pobre sonhador
Na capoeira demonstrava
Sua herança e seu furor
Arrancado de seus lares
De um rei a escravo
Ainda dizem pelas ruas
Que igualdade mora ao lado
Ninguém sente, ninguém sabe
Meus irmãos que se foram
A chegada de invasores
Separou o nosso povo
Mas deixaram suas marcas
Nossa origem, nossa história
Capoeira Mãe Oxum
Afroxé, Iemanjá
Trouxe o samba da Mãe África."
"Êô oyá
It was at the roda of Palmares
That Zumbi consecrated
The capoeira of the past
The portrait of blacks
Freedom that was arising
For a poor dreamer
In capoeira they demonstrated
Their heritage and your wrath
Ripped from their homes
From King to Slave
It's still said in the streets
That equality lives next door
Nobody feels, nobody knows
My brothers who have left us
The arrival of invaders
Separated our people
But they left their marks
Our origin, our history
Capoeira Mãe Oxum
Afroxé, Iemanjá
Brought the samba from Mother Africa."

One of the defining characteristics of the Samba of Roda is the gathering of participants in a circle, referred to as roda. One of the most typical movements is the famous belly push, the umbigada, a testimony of Bantu influence, used by the dancer to invite her successor into the centre of the circle.
Inscribed in 2008 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
