Benefits of Capoeira

Capoeira is an Afro-Indigenous Brazilian art form of resistance and resilience that involves movement, musicality, connection, history, language & more. Developed in Brazil, derived from traditions brought across the Atlantic Ocean by enslaved Africans and fueled by the burning desire for freedom as a means of breaking the bonds of slavery, both physically and mentally.
Capoeira and their practitioners went through a lot struggle to get to where it is today: practiced in more than 160 countries, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2014 and estimated to be practiced by over 6 million people. At Coletivo Bora Vadiar, we are fully engaged in studying and spreading Capoeira's Afro-Indigenous roots by continuously learning from Brazilian teachers who have been mastering the art form's history and traditions for decades. We bring Capoeira teachers to Utah, we visit their schools in Brasil and we engage in online classes throughout the year with them.
Professora Dinguêra plays an important role as our main educator in the collective. She has developed profound connections with capoeiristas in Brasil, in the U.S. as well as other countries, building a deep cultural education bridge that all involved in Utah benefit from.

Additionally, some of the benefits of a regular capoeira practice include:

  • Physical Fitness: Capoeira is a dynamic art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and mobility, promoting overall physical health and strength to all ages.
  • Coordination and Motor Skills: Through intricate movements and sequences, capoeira helps children and adults improve their coordination and develop fine and gross motor skills.
  • Cultural Awareness: Capoeira has deep roots in Afro-Indigenous Brazilian culture. Those practicing capoeira also gain exposure to the rich cultural heritage of this art form.
  • Discipline and Focus: Learning capoeira requires discipline and concentration. It is incredible to see children and adults being completely focused during practice.
  • Social Skills: Capoeira practice fosters teamwork and collaboration, interaction with peers in a positive and supportive environment.
  • Confidence Building: Mastering new moves and sequences in capoeira can boosts self-esteem and confidence, helping folks tackle challenges in other aspects of life.
  • Fun and Creativity: Capoeira requires creativity and self-expression through movement and musicality. Capoeiristas have the freedom to incorporate their style into the movements, making it an enjoyable and artistic form of exercise.
  • Culture & History: Our instructors within Bora Vadiar are engaged in sharing Afro-Indigenous history, culture and traditions through story telling and musicality.
  • Social Equity: Capoeira is an art form born of resistance against oppression and it continues to teach about social equity today. At Bora Vadiar, we are fully committed to learning, teaching and being advocates and active allies to social movements against all types of oppression.
